Gluten Reduced Beers

Have you seen the articles about Gluten Reduced beers that utilize White Labs Clarity Ferm? Well we haven't been mentioned in any of those articles but we've been  experimenting with the WL Clarity Ferm for the last six months now, with fantastic results. A few places have like Culture, Alpine, Duck Foot and Amplified have announced their playing with it too, so we thought it was time for us to let the cat out of the bag. Currently all the Automatic Beers are "GR" beers. This process isn't compatible with all styles, but we'll do it whenever reasonable and mark our beer boards at BLAH and T!T! with (GR) for y'all to know what's up.

(Disclaimer: These beers are NOT gluten free! They are gluten reduced.)

Upgrades & Updates

Upgrades...
Our brew system has been down for a few weeks while we make upgrades. The negative: A lack of Automatic beers on the taps at Blind Lady & Tiger!Tiger!. The positive: A more efficient brew system will allow us to brew more often and more faster. That's awesome.

Updates...
Two new batches are in the fermenters. More to come.

Governor Signs CCBA Bill into Law!
Governor Jerry Brown today signed into law AB 647, the CCBA sponsored bill authored by Assemblymember Wes Chesbro. This bill makes three separate changes to the state statute (we're mostly interested in the 1st change):

Amends the definition of beer manufacturer
Changes the regulations regarding the labeling of refilled growlers
Allows regional guilds and the CCBA to sample beer at association and guild meetings.

Below are the details of these changes. More information can also be found on our web site.

1) The CCBA supports current labeling law that requires a brewery to “obscure” information from another brewery on a container before refilling and selling it. We believe it is important that when a consumer takes home a container of beer that the container (growler, bottle or keg) be accurately labeled with the name of the brewery and the beer inside the container. In some cases, breweries were simply putting a growler into a brown paper bag to “obscure” the previous label and then putting their label on the bag to meet the current requirements. When the consumer walked out the door, they would often take the growler out of the bag, and the growler was then improperly labeled. The growler was labeled as being from Brewery A, but had beer in it from Brewery B. If you were Brewery A, you now had your growler with your name on it with beer in it from another brewery. The ABC had no way to enforce this under current statute. AB 647 adds simple language to B&P code section 25200(c), which states that the previous label must be completely obscured in a manner “not readily removable by the consumer….” Additionally, some breweries were obscuring the name of the previous brewery but not the logo or text from the previous brewery. AB 647 adds that “any information concerning any beer previously packaged in the container, including the information regarding the manufacturer and bottler of such beer, or any associated trademarks must be removed, or completely obscured.” Please read the CCBA Growler Clarification for complete details and best practices on growler refills.

August/September

Released yesterday: the latest Automatic Brewing Co beer to hit the taps of Blind Lady Ale House and Tiger!Tiger! Tavern is B.R.A.U.G.W.eisse, a 5.8% ABV Hefeweizen brewed as part of the new UCSD Extension Brewing Certificate Program. This was a collaboration with classmates who work at commercial breweries that are taking my class, and the name draws from those companies that contributed to its creation: Ballast Point, Refuge Brewing, Automatic Brewing, UCSD, Green Flash, & White Labs.

Also new on-tap is the Automatic Gigantic SuperDuper, a Lactobacillus-Soured ale we brewed with Gigantic Brewing from Portland, Ore.  At 3.7%ABV, this wheat beer is refreshing, tart, and light.

And currently fermenting is a new Automatic Will Powered IPA (Big Cat Edition), the Oatmeal IPA brewed under the menacingly-strict commands of Will Ferrell. Brewed for the upcoming Cancer For College Fundraiser "The Comedy Explosion" featuring Will Ferrell and Special Guests (including Tenacious D!), this beer will help support the good work of Cancer For College, as well as quench the thirst of the shows performers. More info on the show here: http://sandiegotheatres.org/comedy-explosion

In September, Tiger!Tiger! turns Two. We have a bunch of events lined up, including a new Anniversary Ale Release (Barrel-Aged Stout), a hoppy Oktoberfest-style Lager for Ok-TIGER-Fest (Brewed with Doug Hasker of Gordon Biersch), A Dogfish Head Event (including a tasting of 120Min IPA), and more!

31 July 2013

Hyphen-ator and Auto/Gigantic Collab

Automatic Hyphen-ator will be released today. The Hyphen-ator comes in at a low and refreshing 4.8%. It's a sea-salt-sour-mash-grapefruit-summer-quencher-kinda-thing and it's delicious. It's kinda pre-Reinheitsgebot German and kinda Farmhouse-y. It will be on sometime post 5pm at Blind Lady Ale House and it will be on at Tiger!Tiger! this weekend-ish. It will make an appearance at the Farm to Bay Food & Wine event at the Living Coast Discovery Center on Saturday evening paired with Chef Todd Renner's (from BLAH) and Chef Sharon Wilson's (Tiger!Tiger!) food. For more information about that, check out the website: http://www.thelivingcoast.org/food-and-wine/

The Automatic-Gigantic Collaboration beer might be ready not this weekend, but next and it's wild and sour and clean with a big hop aroma. More info on it's way. Maybe.

There's still some Silver Arrow (100% Pilsner Malt, 100% Centennial Hops ) and Handlebar between BLAH & T!T!, but not much. Get it while you can.

Bones Brown (Brewed with Organic Malt & Dark Horse Coffee) is on at both BLAH & Tiger!Tiger!

New growlers will be arriving Thursday or Friday. Sorry about the wait.

It’s balanced, dark, dry, and fairly “sessionable” at 5.5%Abv. Almost like a German Schwartzbier (Black Lager), but Schwarzbier would be a lager, and this is an Ale.

Cheers!

Thanks for Tap Hunter for the write up.

TapHunter.com’s American Craft Beer Week blogging series continues with an in-depth look at brewer Lee Chase’s efforts to raise the beer bar (part 1 and 2 here). Above: Chase writing up his beer offering for the first in a series of coffee beers by Automatic Brewing. More on Chase’s coffee series and what we can expect to drink by summer time, below.

Artisan pizza pies from Blind Lady Ale House decorate the cover of this month’s San Diego Magazine, the perfect snack to accompany Candace Woo’s Critic’s Pick for ‘Best Craft Beer Selection’ in town. BLAH’s curated selection of craft beers from around the world to those small batches made in-house represent brewer Lee Chase’s dedication to quality, a relevant concern as San Diego breweries and pubs grow in numbers. Curious to find out more on Chase’s quest to raise the beer bar, TapHunter.com asked a few questions exploring BLAH’s involvement with the Honest Pint Project, the quest for clean beer, and an expansion for Automatic Brewing Company debuting this summer.
TapHunter: What did you learn at Stone Brewing Company that you still put to use and think about in your endeavors at Blind Lady and/or Automatic Brewing Co?
Chase: Undoubtedly, I learned a ton from my years working at Stone: We grew the brewery from 0-55,000 barrels of beer per year over the 9+ years I was there. However, a lot of that growth was applying what I’d learned from studying Malting & Brewing Science at UC Davis. Read More...
